We had two hard fought games of football this week. The first team were at home against 4th Placed Premier division team Croughton in the first round of the Coronation Cup whilst the Reserves travelled over to league new-comers Broughton and North Newington.
The first team played a great game of end-to-end football and held their own against the higher placed team. With the majority of the possession, and despite most of the Referees decisions going against the Fins Rob How managed to convert a mistake by the keeper into a goal just before half time.
The second half saw the Fins pressing their advantage and Croughton weren’t really able to get a look in until late in the game but a fantastic goal line clearance from Jamie Layton-Hill kept the Fins in the lead and through to the next round of the Coronation Cup.
The Reserves had a rather eventful trip to their away game at Broughton as on arrival they found another away team in the changing rooms! After much wrangling between the team, the league and the F.A the game finally went ahead.
The Reserves had four players making their debuts for the team – Josh Nix, Darren Walden, Dan Baughn and Sam Whitbread – and they settled in well and helped keep Broughton at bay for the majority of the game. Finmere had a few chances but, despite some vailiant goal keeping by Steve Nicholls, it was Broughton who broke the deadlock with 20 minutes to go. Following their goal, Broughton were firmly on the defensive and the Reserves couldn’t find a way through to goal. Despite their valliant efforts the game finished 1 – 0 to Broughton.
Finmere Firsts 1 – Croughton 0
Broughton & N.N 1 – Finmere Reserves 0
